Pioneers of underwater exploration, Squale and DRASS Galeazzi renew their collaboration with the Squale Galeazzi Artiglio, a limited-edition timepiece of just 500 pieces, created to commemorate the 100th anniversary of a patent that helped transform deep-sea exploration.

Chiasso, Switzerland — September 1, 2026 — Five years after the first edition, Squale and DRASS Galeazzi return with the second chapter of their collaboration: the Squale Galeazzi Artiglio. This special timepiece celebrates 100 years since Roberto Galeazzi patented his revolutionary spherical structure, an engineering innovation that made the extreme depths of the sea more accessible. Galeazzi's inventions would later play a key role in one of the most celebrated treasure recoveries in maritime history.

1926–2026: 100 Years of Innovation in the Deep

In 1926, Roberto Galeazzi patented the spherical structure, an engineering principle designed to redefine how humans could withstand the crushing pressures encountered in the deep sea.

Built around this same principle, Galeazzi's Bathyscaphic Tower made history in 1932 aboard the Artiglio. The invention helped locate and recover the cargo of the ocean liner SS Egypt, which had sunk in the English Channel off the United Kingdom at a depth of approximately 130 meters.

The recovered cargo included gold bars estimated to be worth approximately $500 million today. An undertaking considered impossible at the time, the recovery captured international attention and earned Galeazzi the nickname “the Wizard of the Deep.”

Squale Galeazzi Artiglio: History Brought to the Wrist

Bringing together maritime history, professional diving instrumentation, and a pioneering spirit, Squale developed the Squale Galeazzi Artiglio at the specific request of DRASS. It represents the latest chapter in the collaboration between the two companies, five years after the success of their first model.

For this edition, Squale has revived a safety technology found in some of the earliest professional diving watches: the Wet Indicator.

Integrated into the Pantone 295U blue dial, the Wet Indicator is an internal humidity-detection disc designed to signal water ingress into the case through a change in color. Long before modern water-resistance testing instruments became standard, early professional diving watches incorporated indicators of this type, giving divers an immediate way to verify the condition of their instrument and its reliability at depth.

Adding another historical detail, the DRASS Galeazzi logo, featuring the unmistakable diving helmet, is screen-printed onto the inner surface of the flat sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating. The printing technique creates a distinctive floating effect, making the logo appear to hover above the dial.

The watch features a 39.5 mm case measuring 12.6 mm thick, crafted from brushed 316L stainless steel with polished bevels. Water resistance is rated to an impressive 600 meters. Both the crown and case back are screw-down, while the case back is engraved with the DRASS Galeazzi logo.

Inside, the automatic ETA 2824-2 movement provides a 42-hour power reserve. The unidirectional bezel features a flat Pantone 295U blue K1 glass insert, echoing the color of the dial and complemented by a Super-LumiNova BGW9 minute track.

The watch is supplied with two straps. The first is a sand-coloured microfiber fabric strap with a distinctly vintage character. A second Pantone 295U blue rubber strap with a Mosaic texture provides an alternative look while matching the color of the dial and bezel. The straps accommodate wrists measuring 16.5 cm to 21.5 cm.

A Presentation Box Built Around History

The dedicated Squale X Galeazzi presentation box is designed as a journey through the history of the underwater world.

Constructed from deliberately aged-looking cardboard and decorated with the historic DRASS Galeazzi and SQUALE logos, the presentation box houses the watch along with a canvas and microfiber travel pouch.

Inside the pouch is a Squale X Galeazzi commemorative medal featuring the Galeazzi Diver and SQUALE logos. This collectible detail was created to celebrate both the collaboration and the historical heritage connecting the two companies.

Galeazzi's Legacy, a Century Later

To tell the story of this important 100-year anniversary with the depth it deserves, Squale worked closely with historian Fabio Vitale, President of the Scientific Committee of the Artiglio Foundation.

Vitale's original research into Galeazzi's archives and inventions has uncovered engineering details that had previously remained largely within specialist circles, bringing this history to a broader audience.

The connection between Roberto Galeazzi's century-old inventions and the challenges still faced by divers today demonstrates the enduring relevance of his work. An engineer active in the 1920s, Galeazzi helped establish principles that continue to resonate in the design and construction of contemporary diving equipment.

The Squale Galeazzi Artiglio is powered by an automatic ETA 2824-2 No Date movement in Elaboré grade, offering a 42-hour power reserve. The 39.50 mm case measures 47 mm lug-to-lug and 12.6 mm thick, or 13.2 mm including the sapphire crystal, with a 19 mm lug width. The case is crafted from brushed 316L stainless steel with polished bevels and offers 600 meters of water resistance. It features a screw-down crown and a screw-down case back engraved with the Galeazzi logo.

The watch is fitted with a flat sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating, with the “Galeazzi” logo screen-printed on the inner surface to create its distinctive floating effect above the dial. The Pantone 295U blue dial features an internal Wet Indicator humidity-detection disc, applied domed indexes with Super-LumiNova, and Super-LumiNova BGW9 for enhanced visibility in low-light conditions. The unidirectional bezel features a flat Pantone 295U blue K1 glass insert.

The watch comes with a sand-coloured microfiber fabric strap and an additional Pantone 295U blue rubber strap with a Mosaic texture. The straps accommodate a minimum wrist size of 16.5 cm and a maximum wrist size of 21.5 cm.
